FICCDAT Deadline for submissions has been extended to Tuesday, January 4th, 2011.

Body:

As of last night we had received 131 submissions which is exactly the number received by this date for FICCDAT 2007.  We expect up to 2000 submissions this time and most people submit within two or three days of the deadline.  There have been rather a lot of individual requests for extensions so we have decided to ease the pressure on everyone by extending the deadline to over the holiday period. Please link to the conference below and submit your abstract or paper.

 Growing Older With A Disability
RESNA/3rd International Conference on Technology and Aging
 Advances in Neurorehabilitation
 Caregiving in the 21st Century
34th Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Conference
International Conference on Best Practices in Universal Design

 And the special post-Festival meeting
International Conference on Stairway Usability and Safety

A special notice about CMBEC34. There has been some confusion about the process for submitting to the conference. We wish to confirm that it is a two-stage process requiring only an abstract to be submitted by the January deadline.

Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA) Training: Registration for Online Courses Now Available

Training Date:
17 Jan 2011 - 00:00 - 7 Feb 2011 - 00:00
Details:

The IDeA Center is now offering the next two courses in its online continuing education program.

1) The Nature of Barriers & The New Demographics

This unit provides an introduction to the philosophy behind the concept of inclusive design. It examines the "barrier" as encountered in everyday life and as an important theme in art and science. The social meaning of barriers in architecture is explored and universal design is introduced as a means to break down unnecessary barriers to social participation. This unit also provides background material to understand disability demographics and, specifically, the aging of post-industrialized societies.

2) Special Topic: Visitability

The purpose of this course is to educate design and development professionals, government officials, advocates, and other interested students on visitability and related initiatives that support the development of single-family housing with basic access for people with disabilities. This course provides a basic understanding of the concept of visitability, provides good practice examples and cost estimates for visitable features, and describes advocacy strategies for developing visitability projects in local communities.

Registration is now open for both courses and will be available until January 13, 2011.

Both courses begin January 17, 2011, are entirely online and continue for 4 weeks. If you plan to take both courses, please register for each course individually. AIA members will receive 15 Learning Hours (1.5 CEUs) for each course. Each course costs $250.
